These Protein Donuts are healthy, fun to make, protein-packed, and topped with a delicious chocolate glaze. Makes about 18 mini donuts or 9 regular-sized donuts. Perfect guilt-free dessert recipe.
These protein donuts are simple and easy to make, made with bananas, almond butter, protein powder, coconut oil, and other pantry-staple ingredients to make a healthier donut option to enjoy without the quilt. Some of the ingredients can be skipped like the sprinkles which can be replaced with crushed peanuts or shredded coconut.

Ingredients you will need
- Bananas: use very ripe bananas if possible. This is where all the sweetness will be coming from.
- Eggs: for a vegan option you can use egg substitutes like 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed mixed with 3 tablespoons of water. Or you may use 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt.
- Almond butter: or any other nut butter will work
- Coconut oil: Melted or another oil of your choice
- Coconut Flour: or almond flour
- Protein Powder: we used Vanilla flavor Casein powder, you may use plant-based protein, or whey protein.
- Baking soda
- Baking powder
- Chocolate chips: use dark or dairy-free or sugar-free
- Heavy cream– or coconut cream
- Sprinkles: optional, or use crushed peanuts or shredded coconut
How to make protein donuts
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a regular sized or mini donut pan with cooking spray.
- Place the bananas, eggs, almond butter and coconut oil in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth.
- Pour the banana mixture in a bowl and stir in the coconut flour, protein powder, baking soda, and baking powder.
- Spoon the batter into each cavity of the pan – the batter should fill 2/3 of each donut shape.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes for mini donuts or 15-18 minutes for regular sized donuts, until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool for 5 minutes in the pan then unmold the donuts and place on a cooling rack.
- Heat the cream in the microwave until very hot but not boiling, approximately 20-30 seconds. Add the chocolate to the hot cream and stir until smooth. Dip each donut into the chocolate and top with sprinkles.
Storing and freezing donuts
- Store leftover donuts in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 7 days. You may freeze in a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 6 months.
- When ready to eat, if frozen, allow it to de-frost the night before in the fridge and then reheat in the microwave for 10-15 seconds.
Frequently asked questions
We love using casein protein powder for baking instead of other types which tend to let your baked dessert tend to be more on the dry side. Whey protein powder also works but you may find that it makes the donuts a bit more dry.
Yes. We love adding protein to baked donuts. They are healthier than the regular fried donuts you would normally buy at the stores. Eating a healthier version of donuts is a much better alternative.
Normal store-bought donuts have around 3-4g of protein per donut. Making donuts at home with some added protein powder will yield anywhere between 7-11g of protein per serving based on the size of the donuts.
Tips to make the best protein donuts
- For the best texture, be careful not to overbake the donuts. Keep in mind that the donuts will continue to “bake” as you place them on a wire wrack to cook. Also, the addition of protein powder may result in a “dry” texture.
- Make a healthier glaze if possible by using fat-free or sugar-free chocolate.
- Don’t have a donut pan? No worries, just make muffins instead. You may make 6 medium-sized muffins or 9 mini muffins.
- Allow the Donuts to cool before adding any glaze.
- Want to make chocolate donuts? Add 1/4 cocoa powder into the batter.

- 3 Tbsp Heavy cream, or coconut cream
- 2 Tbsp sprinkles
